Shared web hosting

Shared web hosting is also called virtual hosting and is the most popularly used service. Shared hosting means that you share one server with several other clients of your hosting company. This includes CPU time, memory, OS, applications, bandwidth etc. The web host manages the server to ensure uptime, upgrading hardware as well as software.

Since the service is shared, the cost will depend on the number of clients being hosted on the server. Obviously, the hosting company will try to maximize profits with every server. The clients do not have full control over the server, only with their own websites through a control panel.

When opting for shared hosting, ensure that you check to see whether any scripts or types of software are not being allowed by the host. It is also essential to see that no single user is taking up all of the pooled resources. Some server software like Apple allow the administrators to pinpoint any errors or unusual CPU utilization so that users are not affected or disturbed. However, there is always the possibility of a problem occurring and all the websites on a particular server may fail.

Shared or virtual hosting are usually the cheapest and most affordable solutions for an online presence. This is because the company by virtue of hosting several websites is able to pass the savings to the consumer.

However, if your web application requires an excessive amount of CPU, RAM or other resources, or you need special software plugins and drivers, a shared hosting environment may not be the right solution for you. Moreover, if your web site needs to have guaranteed or very high rate of uptime, it is preferable to not be in a shared environment as it might be possible that other clients hosted on the computer could cause problems for everyone.
